Prepare the conversation
Selection interviews should help both sides understand the opportunity. Begin with the decisions, relationships and expectations of the position, then identify the experiences that would be useful to explore in detail.
Follow the detail
Ask how a person approached a situation, which choices they made and what they learned. Context matters: similar outcomes can reflect very different responsibilities. The objective is a useful understanding of experience, not a performance of rehearsed answers.
Compare consistently
A shared evaluation framework helps a hiring team discuss candidates fairly and clearly. Keep observations connected to the mandate, separate evidence from assumption and leave room to explore unanswered questions before reaching a decision.
